Good Morning! Here’s the Monday Morning Blog!
Did you get a chance to touch base with that teen or young adult in your life last week? Have you been able to spend some time together this summer? Take some time to do so this month before it is time to go back to school and into that routine.
This past weekend, Jim and I went up to our family cabin to take care of some projects. We got a lot accomplished and got some much needed downtime as our young adult sons worked their jobs at home. Do your teens work part-time? It is not only a great way to make some money, but it is also a great way to meet other teens, potential mentors, and get some work experience which will help them in securing future jobs.
August’s Theme – Summertime Fun
“In the summer, the days were long, stretching into each other. Out of school, everything was on pause and yet happening at the same time, this collection of weeks when anything was possible.” — Sarah Dessen
When I think back to my summer vacations from school, I remember spending time playing summer softball and participating in marching band practice. I also remember taking vacations with my family to see my grandparents in Washington, DC.
It was time where I was taken out of the structure of a school day and put into more of a slowed down version of life where I could make choices on what I wanted to do before heading back to school.
In this last month of summer vacation, I am going to focus the blog on Summertime fun. Summer isn’t over yet, there is still some time to get a couple more activities in. Check out my mentor page and see how I am doing it Selma P. Verde – Mentor Page
That good ole ‘What I did this summer’ paper
Do you remember the first days back to school? It was always fun to see your friends, figure out what classes you have together and find out where your locker is. The other thing I remember about back to school is when our English teacher would assign us the ‘What I did this summer’ paper to get back into the swing of writing. Have you ever written one of those? Well, here is my version of what I did this summer.
What I did this summer by Selma P. Verde
When I think about this past summer, here are the three things I remember most
Being at the cabin
Our family has a cabin in Northern Minnesota. We like to spend time there, not only with our family, but also with our friends. We are lucky to have some of our extended family living in cabins near by, so we are able to spend time with them while we are there too.
One of the other things I love about being at our cabin is being able to get some down time to work on writing and other things for my business. Sometimes it is nice to be somewhere other than my office or at home. Less distractions.
Having a cup of coffee and looking out the window at the lake is a very relaxing thing for me to do. Our cabin faces west, so we are also blessed to have a nightly sunset show.
4th of July weekend at home
With our young adult sons being at the cabin for the holiday weekend, Jim and I stayed home. Jim was on call for his job and I thought it would be a great time to get things done around the house.
Wound up being a good plan as I ended up having a sinus cold over the weekend. I had just came off of a day job deadline and I think things were catching up with me. As I was feeling better, we were able to get together with our step daughter and her boyfriend for coffee and lunch towards the end of the weekend.
It was nice to have the extended weekend off from work. It is a good refresh for the mind and reminds me of a summer vacation I had when I was younger, even though I wasn’t feeling 100%.
Trip to Door County, WI
I am very lucky to have friends who have a summer home in Door County, WI. We typically visit them once a year to hang out and relax. Jim and I always have fun on the road trip out there.
While we were there, we and visited lighthouses, state parks and coffee shops. There are always things new things to see, even when we visit once a year.
One of our favorite places to visit are lighthouses. As much as I am a fan of the water, I also love lighthouses. Each one has its own story and I love the history surrounding them. They are beacons in the night and nasty weather for the boats that travel to move goods and people from place to place.
This lighthouse is from Cana Island in Door County. You are able to catch a tractor ride across the lake to get to the island and see the lighthouse. According to Wikipedia, it was built in 1869 and first lit in 1870 and is still actively used for navigation.
In conclusion, these were three of my favorite things from my summer vacation this year.
So, what would your paper look like? What would be your top three memories from the past summer? Please let me know in the comments below.
The Way Series is FREE this Weekend
Looking for a couple of good reads for your teens?
The Way Series is a coming-of-age series for teens and young adults. It focuses on challenges that teens can face while growing up. The Hard Way is the first book, and it is a relatable story about peer pressure and Shawn’s Way is a relatable story about bullying. These books may help you to start a conversation with your teen about these issues or may give them a story they can read that relates to something they may be facing.
On September 2-5, each of the eBooks in this series will be FREE. Be sure to pick up your copies for end of summer reads just in time for back to school. It will also give you time to get caught up before book three in the series, The Street’s Way, comes your way in 2023.
Here is a link to my books tab – Selma’s Books. Check it out for more information about this great series for teens and young adults.
