Selma’s Monthly News – July 2023

Good Morning! It is time again for Selma’s Monthly News!

Have you touched base with your teen? Ask them if they need help with anything. It will show that you are interested and want to engage with them. Talking to them will also give you some insight into how they are feeling and what they may be struggling with. It is important for all of us to check in with each other.

Resisting Peer Pressure

As Mentoring a Dream embarks on their third quarter theme of peer pressure, the topic this month is how to help teens make good decisions and supporting them in the consequences. Here is a link to learn more about this month’s theme and Mentoring A Dream.

There is no getting around it, peer pressure is a normal part of many young adults’ and teenagers’ formative years. Helping teens learn a variety of communication strategies helps them to learn to make better decisions with dealing with peer pressure from their classmates and friends. Throughout the third quarter of 2023, we will be discussing peer pressure and various ways you can support your teen to stand up to it!

And, our featured author this month is Laurie Halse Anderson. She is an author of children and young adult novels who is known for tackling tough subjects with humor and sensitivity. In her book Speak, she talks about how one student is treated by her peers after she does the right thing, call the police to report an end-of-year party that she and her peers were attending. Learn more about Laurie and her story in our featured author post later this month.

My Journey

Even though my journey started out as an author, it is not only about the series. It has evolved into sharing my story about how my passion made a series of books and a platform that helps parents engage with their teens and young adults. Writing Updates

Here is the monthly news from the writing side

Launching Josh’s Story

Last month, I launched “Josh’s Story”. It is a short story which is part of The Way Series. We tend to hear about what happens from the target of the bullying, in this case, I wanted Josh’s side to be heard. And through this story, I want to suggest a way to combat bullying, by talking about the issues that create it, on both sides.

The Street’s Way is in final self editing phase

With the launch of “Josh’s Story”completed, now I am onto final self edits for The Street’s Way, book #3 of The Way Series. What are self edits? It is the final phase of rewriting and editing I do myself before the manuscript goes to my editor Michelle.

How is the editing going? I am currently working through the manuscript to make sure I am not missing anything. While I was writing and editing “Josh’s Story”, I stumbled onto some changes that I want to make in The Street’s Way.
