Book Review – Anatomy of a Misfit by Andrea Portes

Good Morning! Here’s the Monday Morning Blog!

How was your week last week? Get a chance to check in with that teen/young adult in your life? Our young adults were up at our cabin this past weekend with their uncle who they haven’t hung out with for quite a while. It sounds like it was a good time to be had by both sides and made for some great memories.

This month I will be focusing on the theme of getting back to school and the challenges involved in it. The book I chose to review this month is a YA novel with a high school setting. It focuses on the roles students play within their peer groups and how social interactions are based on who you are and what clique you belong to.

Author Background

Andrea Portes is a bestselling novelist of adult novels. Anatomy of a Misfit was her first young adult novel, which is based on her ninth-grade year of junior high.

Summary of the book

The story is told from the point of view of the main character, Anika Dragomir., a tenth grader at Pound High School in Lincoln, Nebraska. As the third most popular girl in school, she is constantly having to follow around the most popular girl, Becky Vilhauer. However, Anika is a cool kid with a conscience, and she helps out some of her fellow students who are being picked on by Becky or because of who they are.

Reaction to the book

I liked the book. It was a very relatable story with engaging characters. It is a good example of how things work within the social structures found in high school. How the popular kids are able show their power by labelling other kids at school, just by how they feel about them. This labelling can set the paths for how their classmates get through their high school years, making it easier or more challenging.

I would say this novel would be geared more towards young adults due to some vulgar language and sexual references (nothing more than how teenagers talk to each other).
