Working on the blog this week

Good Morning! Here is the Monday Morning Blog!

Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving. Our family spent time with family during multiple parts of the weekend. And as for the other parts? We did a little shopping. Got a couple of Christmas gifts, but did more to get somethings we wanted and needed for projects around the house.

Writing News for the week ahead

I am signed up to take on a blog Content Creation Challenge. The goal is to prepare blog posts for the entire month of December during this challenge. Excited to do it. Why not sit down and get ahead on writing the posts during the holidays? I am also excited to get some tips for writing my posts. I’ll let you know how it goes and share some more information with you when I post next week’s blog.

With the holidays last week, not much writing got done in the writing house. However, I have been doing some business planning for my author platform; looking into setting up a company and a website for the blog and sale of my books. Lots of brainstorming and research going on here to help me get the process for both going. All of the things that will help grow my author brand and platform. It is pretty exciting but a big next few steps.

Selma’s Thoughts

I took our dog Maddie for a walk tonight around the neighborhood. We checked out all of the Christmas lights the neighbors put up. Seeing lights and, spending time with family is getting me into the Christmas spirit. I am not a big fan of the snow and cold, which we have yet to see, but it is not only a part of living in Minnesota, but it is a part of the holiday season I have come to cherish. What parts of the holidays are some of your favorites?

With the holiday season underway and Christmas just around the corner, have you thought about purchasing your very own copy of my book The Hard Way?

Looking for a good middle grade early teen read for a holiday gift? Be sure to pick up a copy of The Hard Way! It is available in e-book format on Amazon.com and in paperback on both Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com.

This week from the Writing House

Good Morning! Here is the Monday Morning Blog!

I took a couple of days off from work to take a breath last week. Not only did I publish my first book this year, but it has been a very stressful year of transitions for me. Since the beginning of the year, my day job had a full revamp of people and procedures. And, just recently, my home life has a job change for Jim. It is a good thing, but it has changed our family schedule and added another car to our household. I know I am not the only one who has gone through changes, I think it is just starting to catch up with me.

Teen Issues from an adult perspective – Why people bully others?

Good Morning! Here is the Monday Morning Blog!

The next book in The Way series, The Bully’s Way, is a story about bullying and one response to it. I hope to publish October 2018 during Bullying Prevention Month. Maybe even on National Unity Day. A day in which people wear orange to show support for students who have been bullied. In 2018, that day will be October 24th. I write about middle grade and teen issues, but bullying is not exclusive to this age group. To round out Bullying Prevention Month 2017, I decided to look at people bully.

Teen Issues – Bullying

Good Morning! Here is the Monday Morning Blog!

Hope you all had a great weekend. Weather here was wet and rainy on Saturday, but a great fall day (for Minnesota standards) on Sunday. I hosted our book club on Saturday and took care of some tasks in the Writing House on Sunday.  While doing some online research, I found a story about bullying in a Tennessee high school.

Observations from an author’s perspective

I have been pretty busy with my day job lately. I wanted to share two lines from my current project, The Bully’s Way, on Facebook yesterday and noticed the last update I made to the manuscript was August 3rd. It bummed me out.

It isn’t that I haven’t been able to write. I did get the Monday Morning Blog written and published for two and almost three Mondays since then. But haven’t had the time to get the edits done for my second book.

The writing projects I have in progress right now, my WIPs, are for middle grade/YA readers. So, I would say that some of my best storyline ideas come from observing teens. Not only in day to day life, but also on television and on the internet. I have two teens living in my household and have spent a lot of time at baseball games with them and their friends. I was also a teen once, so I can probably speak from experience.

As a teenager, I don’t know how aware I was about how my actions impacted my life path. As an adult, I can see those kinds of things with our kids and their friends. It is the angle I chose to write the books in The Way series from. To show a teen the kinds of situations they would come across and the choices they may have to make. I want to give them some things to think about when they are given a decision to do or not to do something. Teens may not have as much life experience at the time, but they can always use some additional information to help them out.

There are so many moments as a young adult when I finally figured out the value in what my parents told me. It was all good advice, it just didn’t fit with my life experience at the time to understand its value. It is something I remind myself as a parent when I talk to our kids about things. They may not get in now, but they will.

Peer pressure is one of those situations teens must deal with. The Hard Way is about a kid named Paul, who is put into a situation where he must make some new friends in high school. He finds out he may have picked the wrong crowd to hang out with. Find out how he deals with it in the first book of The Way series.

Be sure to pick up your copy of The Hard Way! It is available on Amazon.com and in both paperback and e-book. And on BarnesandNoble.com in paperback.

This week from the writing house

Just a little writing inspiration this week. Made me think about how important it is to keep the audience in mind. We want to get them engaged and keep them engaged.

Reading Quote - Patterson

I did a lot of rewrites on The Bully’s Way this past weekend at our cabin and I think the story is really coming together. Looking forward to doing a full read through when I have this editing round done.

When I get to this point with editing, it becomes very motivating to keep writing. I want to see where the story is going to take me. I also keep checking with myself to make sure that not only I like where the story is going, but so will my readers.

Have a great week!

Weekend for spending time with family

What a great summer weekend! Jim and I spent Saturday together at a local Raspberry Festival and my dad and I spent some time together at an air show being hosted at a local airport on Sunday.

It was a nice weekend. I enjoyed just being at these events and in the moment with the ones I love. It was a nice break from all of the stresses with work and writing right now.

As I worked on my book marketing this week, I came up with some ideas for a flyer. I am finding the need for one not only to post in places, but to be a part of a press packet for The Hard Way and other books in the series once they are published. As I thought about it more, it would be a nice item to have when I am giving copies of books to libraries, schools or reviewers. A little something including a blurb about the book, a little bit about me, and where to buy additional copies.  They would be left with something to refer to later or to hand off to someone else. That will definitely be worked on in the writing house this week.

A few more of my book marketing cards went out with personal notes to family, friends and contacts last week. It doesn’t cost much to do it, and I get to send a personal note to keep in touch with people I care about. I already have one sale and a Facebook post from doing it. I am so honored that my friends and family want to help me promote my book. I’ll be sending another batch this week.

Here is a fun quote from Dr. Seuss about books.

So, if you are looking for a book, be sure to check out The Hard Way. Here is the link to it!

It is available on Amazon.com in both paperback and e-book.

Keep an eye out for next week’s post. I am planning for a book review. Not sure what book it will be yet. Making that selection tomorrow. Have a great week!

Happy 4th of July weekend!

Hope every one is able to celebrate our country’s independence this weekend. That is what the 4th is all about. I think the meanings of holidays are sometimes lost in all of the festivities. Also, be sure to find sometime with your family. It is important to make time for them. I’ve been finding that out a lot lately through my struggle with the work life balance.

What a different weekend this is. When the 4th of July winds up on a Tuesday, it extends the weekend. Good for family time, a little crazy for the work schedule. Wind up having to take a vacation day to get the extended weekend.

I am still struggling to find time to promote The Hard Way. It has been difficult for me to make time for my projects lately. Part of the problem is work, but I believe part of it is me. Work has made a lot of demands for my time and energy while the home life continues to be busy. But, I like to take on the challenges at work and work hard to make things happen.

If I could work as hard as I do for others to get their stuff done on my own projects, I know I would be successful. My constantly putting everyone else’s priorities first, makes it feel like my goals are so far off. I am so thankful my fiancee helped me to make my first book get published. He said it needed to be done and I needed to do something for me.

A work and life balance is a hard thing to strike, especially in the age of cell phones and the internet. You can pretty much get in touch with anyone at any time via either the phone or social media. However, thanks to the internet and modern technology, I am able to be up north with my family for this 4th of July. Otherwise I would be at home working this weekend.

I don’t want to be whining about where I am at. There are a lot of good things going on for me. But striving for a balance between work and home has been way lopsided towards the work side lately. And it has been affecting not only me, but my family as well. So, I am glad that I get to be at the cabin with my family this weekend, but I am going to have to work on my own priorities more important and make more time for my projects and my family.

Speaking of family, have any middle grade readers looking for a good read? How about checking out the link to my book! (Come on, you knew that was coming!)

Be sure to pick up your copy of The Hard Way! It is available on Amazon.com in both paperback and e-book.
