Book Review – Looking for Alaska by John Green

Good Morning! Here is the Monday Morning Blog!

Hope you all a great Easter yesterday. I spent some time with my dad in the morning and Jim’s family for a great Easter meal in the afternoon. The bunny also stopped by with a few treats for us.

As I looked for my next read earlier this week, I decided on one of the young adult books on my to be read list. Not sure what I thought this book was going to be about from the title, Looking for Alaska. Maybe it was looking for Alaska the place. I sure wouldn’t have guessed we would be looking for a girl named Alaska. After I confirmed which Alaska we were looking for, then my next question was why are we looking for her? Good thing I read the book so I could find out.

Looking for Alaska

Author

John Green

Type of Book

Young Adult Fiction

Background

This is John Green’s debut novel. He is an American author of multiple young adult novels. Looking for Alaska was the winner of the Michael L. Printz Award from the American Library Association. It also led that association’s list for most-challenged books in 2015 due to profanity and sexually explicit scenes.

Summary of the story

Miles Halter is the new kid at Culver Creek Boarding School. His roommate, Chip Martin, is a veteran at the school. He introduces Miles around and gets him involved in some of the pranks that are being played on other students and staff. Alaska Young is an active player in these pranks too. She is outgoing and a do what she wants to do type of girl. Her and Miles get to know each other throughout the book. One night, as they are getting to be more than just friends, she flees the school in a panic and is involved in a car accident. Her fellow classmates try to figure out what happened.

Reactions to the book

This coming of age novel deals with multiple teen issues commonly found while navigating through their high school years. This book is a popular teen read and now that I have read it, I can see why. I enjoyed the book with engaging characters and story line. It was a hard one to put down.

I believe this book would be a good read for older teen or young adult readers due to the profanity and sexually explicit scenes found in it.
